Visit Souillac, the gateway to the Lot
Near Camping La Plage in Meyronne
Souillac, on the banks of the Dordogne
less than an hour from Camping La Plage in Meyronne
Just a stone’s throw from our campsite La Plage in Meyronne, Souillac (Lot) is a small town ideal for a “practical” outing: people come here for its Romanesque heritage, its Dordogne riverbanks, and its lively market town atmosphere (market, terraces, walks).
Souillac is located at the confluence of the Dordogne and the Borrèze, a location that has long shaped its history and trade. Allow half a day for the essentials, or a full day if you add a walk along the water.
The must-see: Sainte-Marie Abbey, the market hall, and the Louis-Vicat bridge
Start with the Sainte-Marie Abbey, Souillac’s must-see monument: a large 12th-century Romanesque church in the Romanesque-Byzantine style, easily recognizable by its three domes and its remarkable sculpted decor (it is listed as a Historic Monument). Next, soak up the town center atmosphere by passing through the Place Doussot market hall, a true local meeting point: the Friday market is perfect for discovering Lot products before heading back to the campsite. To finish the visit, head to the Louis-Vicat bridge south of the town, an iconic structure crossing the Dordogne.
Quercyland and Copeyre Canoë, the summer essentials in Souillac
On the leisure side, Souillac is also an excellent base for “holiday” activities: Quercyland is the ultimate family spot in summer, with several swimming pools, slides (including multi-lane and thrill slides), and relaxation areas on a large site by the Dordogne. For a nature outing, Copeyre CanoĂ« offers trips down the Dordogne (mini-routes, full day, or even over several days) — perfect for discovering the valley “along the water,” and very popular when staying around Souillac.
Hiking around Souillac: touring and walks along the water
Souillac is also a popular stop for walkers: the town is on the GR®6 route, a trail that crosses the Lot (via Rocamadour) and reaches Souillac before continuing towards the Dordogne.
On-site, the simplest walk consists of strolling along the rivers: the Dordogne for the views, and the Borrèze for a cooler, shaded walk (practical in summer).
