The Gardens of Marqueyssac in Vézac
less than an hour from Camping La Plage in Meyronne
45 km (about 50 minutes) from Camping La Plage in Meyronne, the Hanging Gardens of Marqueyssac offer one of the most beautiful walks in the Périgord Noir, perfect if you’re looking for an outdoor excursion combining nature, heritage, and panoramic views.
Set on a rocky spur, the estate overlooks the valley from its limestone cliffs and unfolds an elegant, almost timeless walk around a stone-roofed château.
A botanical masterpiece
Marqueyssac is first and foremost a signature: 150,000 hand-trimmed century-old boxwoods, aligned, rounded, sculpted, forming “green rooms” where you can stroll in the shade. The park covers 22 hectares and offers over 6 km of pathways, between viewpoints, rock gardens, waterfalls, outdoor theaters… Each turn reveals a new perspective on the Dordogne Valley.
Family Activities
This is the garden of “viewpoints”: visitors come as much for the sculpted boxwoods as for the panoramas. The Cliff Walk and its viewpoints is a must, especially in late afternoon when golden light falls on the valley. And while adults savor the quieter spots (near the rock gardens and waterfalls), children have plenty to keep them busy: wide open spaces, cabins, and a boxwood maze to explore. A really nice bonus: the park is also home to semi-free-roaming animals, including peacocks that wander the pathways and sheep used for eco-grazing, a gentle and ecological way to maintain certain areas of the estate.
A gourmet break
The restaurant–tea room at Marqueyssac is a great option for a break without leaving the view: located in the north wing of the château, it serves light and delicious cuisine (simple dishes, pastries, ice cream, beverages) to enjoy on a shaded panoramic terrace… or inside the château if the weather turns.
