Near Camping La Plage in Meyronne
A prehistoric treasure
A unique experience in the heart of Rocamadour
Just 25 km from Camping La Plage in Meyronne, our family campsite on the banks of the Dordogne in the Lot, lies a true hidden treasure: the Grotte des Merveilles, nestled in the plateau of Rocamadour.
Discovered in 1920 and classified as a Historic Monument since 1925, this natural cavity is a real time machine. We often recommend it to our vacationers seeking escape, culture, and nature.
A magical setting sculpted by time
Located in the heart of the Causses du Quercy Regional Natural Park, the cave has been shaped by water over millennia. The result: a spectacular underground world.
Inside, you’ll discover:
- Giant stalactites and stalagmites
- Impressive mineral columns
- “Gours”: natural pools where water reflects the formations
- A cool and magical atmosphere, perfect for summer
Cave paintings 25,000 years old
What makes the Grotte des Merveilles famous are its exceptional prehistoric paintings.
Among the sixty or so motifs recorded:
- Negative hand prints (pigments projected around the hand),
- Animal representations: horses, deer… and a feline, which is very rare
“A truly moving and awe-inspiring moment, even for the youngest visitors.”
On-site services and family relaxation
After the visit, we recommend taking time to enjoy the surroundings. It’s an ideal outing for families.
On site:
- A shaded park with children’s playground,
- A gift shop with minerals, books…
- A small snack area (drinks, ice cream, snacks).
“We recommend leaving early to avoid the crowds. And on the way back, why not relax by the river near the campsite to end the day peacefully?”
