Sarlat-la-Canéda, a medieval jewel

less than an hour from Camping La Plage in Meyronne

Less than 40 minutes from Camping La Plage in Meyronne, Sarlat-la-Canéda is one of the most iconic towns in Périgord Noir. Visitors come for its exceptionally preserved historic center, lively squares, and gourmet lifestyle (markets, foie gras, walnuts… and of course truffles).

In one day, you can experience a beautiful concentration of heritage, a shopping break, a terrace visit, and a short nature detour in the late afternoon.

Cultural activities: cathedral, Lantern of the Dead, and Renaissance

Start with the medieval heart, around Place de la Liberté, the true central point of the town (and one of the best areas to “feel the pulse” of Sarlat). Continue with Saint-Sacerdos Cathedral, a flagship monument of Sarlat, classified as a Historic Monument (often referenced as 1840).
Just behind, don’t miss the Lantern of the Dead, located in the Jardin des Enfeus: it is one of the most unique and photographed buildings in the historic center. Finally, add a Renaissance touch with the Maison de La Boétie (16th century), a beautiful example of refined architecture in the heart of the town.

Markets, Truffle Festival, and Film Festival

Sarlat also comes alive through its events. The traditional market is an institution: Wednesday morning (food) and Saturday (large market), with a fat market on Saturday mornings in winter.
As for major events, the Truffle Festival and the Foie Gras and Truffle Culinary Academy transform the town into a gourmet capital.
Finally, film buffs know the Sarlat Film Festival: the program and meetings usually take place in early November.

Hiking: the “Around the Castles” loop

For a hassle-free walk, the Tourist Office highlights many Sarlat circuits (forests, valleys, hamlets of blonde stone).

Also very accessible: the Sarlat–Cazoulès greenway, pleasant for a walk or bike ride, on an old railway line (ideal for families or at the end of the day).
