Haut Quercy Railway in Martel

less than an hour from Camping La Plage in Meyronne

Just 9 km (about 15 min) from Camping La Plage in Meyronne, the Haut-Quercy Tourist Railway (the famous Martel Steam Train – “Truffadou”) takes you on a timeless getaway.

Departing from Martel station, you’ll find all the charm of old-fashioned travel, with traction provided by a steam locomotive or a diesel engine depending on the day—an ideal atmosphere for a family outing.

A route with exceptional panoramic views

The route itself is the star of the show: a 13 km round trip, carved into the cliffside over 80 meters high, offering spectacular views of the Dordogne Valley. The journey is narrated (on most trips), allowing you to enjoy the scenery while learning about the history of the line and the places you pass through. Between cliffs and viewpoints, it’s an effortless “wow” of a ride, perfect even with children.

The railway museum

Before or after your train ride, take the time to head up to the railway museum, established in 2014 on the upper floor of the passenger hall. You’ll discover a collection of vintage items (donated by JosĂ© and Nadine Demeurs and enriched by other donors): uniforms, posters, signals, lanterns, track tools, models, and unusual objects that tell the great story of the rails. Entry is €1 (free for under 12s). Please note: the museum is not wheelchair accessible, but a photo album is available as an alternative.

The escape game: “Mission Étoile du Nord”

Another original experience in Martel: the “Mission Étoile du Nord” escape game. The concept is ultra-immersive: you play inside a Trans Europ Express dining car, plunged into a 1980s espionage plot. You have 60 minutes to lead the investigation and “save the world” in a team of 4 to 6 players (activity suitable from age 6). The game is available during certain periods (the website mentions it is open for several months of the season).
