A visit between prehistory and nature
Cave art and natural formations
50 km from our Camping La Plage in Meyronne, in the peaceful village of Payrignac, the Cougnac Caves offer an unforgettable visit combining prehistoric art and geological splendour.
Discovered in 1949 and 1952, they are among the region’s most authentic and accessible prehistoric sites. It’s a place we regularly recommend to our guests who are curious about history and nature.
Two caves, two fascinating atmospheres
The Cougnac Caves are made up of two natural caverns, 200 metres apart:
- The first cave reveals a magical setting: slender stalactites, massive stalagmites, majestic pillars, and a mineral forest shaped by erosion,
- The second cave, adorned with 30,000-year-old paintings, takes us back to the Gravettian, a period when cave art reached its peak.
- A must-see: Mammoths, large deer, ibex, human figures and enigmatic signs.
A fascinating guided tour
The visit, around 1 hour, is guided only. The guides are passionate and great at explaining, suitable for all audiences.
